I extend my heartfelt felicitations to all ranks, CPLs and families on the successful completion of 50 glorious years of BRO in the service of the Nation. I also pay homage to all those who have laid down their lives on the altar of duty and earned laurels for the Organisation.
In the last 50 years we have successfully completed our primary task of road construction and infrastructure development in the border areas and also deftly diversified ourselves into multifarious activities. We have witnessed an exponential increase in our domain of responsibility and our mission to serve the Nation. We have not only assisted the Armed Forces during all wars and acts of external aggressions but also the civil administration during natural calamities. From just two projects in June 1960, today the BRO stands tall with seventeen Projects/Special Task Force. We are recognised as the major contributor in socio-economic development of remote border areas of the Nation.
Our endeavours of infrastructure development in foreign countries have been significant and helped in improving India's relations with its neighbouring countries.
The year 2009-10 can be easily reckoned as a milestone year in the bridges and tunnel construction. 38 Major bridges were constructed in the year thus raising the total to 406 bridges. Construction of 763.5 m long Pasighat Bridge over the mighty river Siang in Arunachal Pradesh is a shining example of perseverance and dedication. Commencement of construction of 8.8 Km long Rohtang Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh is going to be an undisputed defining moment in the history of BRO. It is our proud privilege and honour to be tasked for various prestigious national development schemes like Special Accelerated Road Development Programme (SARDP) in the North-Eastern states and PM's Reconstruction Plan for Jammu & Kashmir.
Our motto “Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam” is religiously followed every day in all tasks undertaken by us. The spirit of BRO personnel to work with excellence and to remain undeterred in the face of adversities and challenges has been recognised in the form of various awards bestowed upon us and this year alone we have been honoured with one Vishisht Seva Medal and three Shaurya Chakras besides 39 Govt Commendation Cards, 01 Mention-in-Despatches, 04 COAS and 07 VCOAS Commendation Cards.
BRO owes its present success to the efforts of our visionary veterans who have nurtured and guided this elite organisation to this exalted position. I take this opportunity to affirm that team BRO would continue to serve the Nation with a renewed vigour and in accordance with the highest standards of excellence set by our predecessors. We are looking forward to an era of progressive mechanisation and modernisation to keep abreast with the latest technology in the world and to continue to be a premiere road construction agency both nationally as well as internationally while meeting the strategic needs of the armed forces. I am confident that the future years will see us as a more professionally sound, dynamic force and the BRO will continue to be reckoned as an essential instrument in Nation building.
